Book Design:
Book design is still a large industry for designers despite the confusion of the changes from print to digital books.
Books are marketed as products
- Two basic categories: Book interior and Book jacket
- Cover must attract the reader, inside the text and images must be displayed in an accessible and pleasing manner.
- Book designers are typographers, skilled at arranging type in an elegant and accessible manner.
Separation of book and jacket- Before the jacket design and interior design were separate, now it is more common that they are related and often designers are skilled in many different disciplines.
Marketing Schmarketing- Jacket design is the first line of persuasion to win over the consumer.
The approaches to graphic design used by different publishing enterprises are as different as the books they produce.
Making Book- Similar techniques used in the past are made easier by technology. Inspiration may come from going back to paper making, bookbinding, typesetting.
Rant and rave: Will the book survive? The book still survives despite vast changes in the creation and format.

- Entry Level- Emphasis on typography, photography and illustration. Formal taste and conceptual acuity.
- Book jacket designs, range of themes, fiction and non fiction
- Interior book pages
- Junior/Senior Designer- Include as much printed work as possible as well as school work. Senior designers should show only printed book covers and interiors, bindings if possible.
- Format- 35mm slides, CD, DVD in Flash, PowerPoint, and iPhoto. Also online portfolios.
